De oorlog speelde een belangrijke rol in mijn stad Tielt. Er zijn vele monumenten, verhalen
en huizen die sporen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog hebben achtergelaten. Overal waar je in
Tielt rondloopt, kom je wel bezienswaardigheden tegen die dateren uit WOI.
Voor dit project mochten we een dorpskrant vormgeven in het thema van onze eigen stad of
dorp. Mijn keuze voor “Tielt tijdens de oorlog” leek aanvankelijk een gevoelig thema om
te behandelen en tegelijkertijd de stad sfeervol te presenteren. Toch besloot ik voor dit
thema te gaan door gebruik te maken van fellere, uitgesproken kleuren en er iets unieks van
te maken.
Ik heb de branding van mijn krant in een geel jasje gestoken, geïnspireerd door de kleuren
van de Vlaanderen, waarmee Tielt zich sterk verbonden voelt vanwege haar traditierijke
achtergrond. Het rood-rozige kleur symboliseert enerzijds de kracht en energie die
mijn stad uitstraalt vanuit alle hoeken. Dit weerspiegelt de evenementen die worden
georganiseerd voor en door de Tieltenaren en de nauwe relatie die de stad heeft met haar
inwoners. Anderzijds verwijst deze kleur ook naar de gevoelige gebeurtenissen en offers die
de stad destijds heeft meegemaakt tijdens de oorlog. Met deze dubbelzijdige kleurendynamiek
kreeg mijn krant zowel een gevoelige als energieke uitstraling van Tielt.
Voor de typografie koos ik voor monospaced typewritten letters van Antarctica Mono. Dit
lettertype roept de sfeer op van die tijd waarin alles nog met de hand werd geschreven/
geïllustreerd, met een typemachine werd getypt of gezet werd met behulp van loden letters,
aangezien computers toen nog niet bestonden. Om de uitstraling van het effect op papier
oude drukpersen te benadrukken, waarbij het leek alsof tekst & grafiek gestempeld werd op
papier, koos ik voor Pulpo Rust, wat de vintage typografie mooi weergeeft. Handgetekende
illustraties als grafiek leek me er ook mooi bijpassen.
In dit dossier zul je de evolutie zien van hoe mijn ideeën beetje bij beetje tot hun recht
kwamen voor mijn dorpskrant “Tielts Verzet”.

The war played an important role in my city, Tielt. There are many monuments, stories, and houses that bear traces of World War I. Wherever you walk in Tielt, you will encounter landmarks dating back to WWI.
For this project, we were allowed to design a village newspaper themed around our own city or town. My choice of 'Tielt during the War' initially seemed a sensitive topic to address while also presenting the city in a charming way. Nevertheless, I decided to embrace this theme by using brighter, bold colors and creating something unique.
I dressed the branding of my newspaper in a yellow jacket, inspired by the colors of Flanders, with which Tielt feels a strong connection due to its rich tradition. The reddish-pink color symbolizes the strength and energy that my city radiates from all corners. This reflects the events organized for and by the people of Tielt and the close relationship the city has with its residents. On the other hand, this color also refers to the sensitive events and sacrifices the city experienced during the war. With this dual color dynamic, my newspaper gained both a sensitive and energetic representation of Tielt.
For the typography, I chose monospaced typewritten letters from Antarctica Mono. This typeface evokes the atmosphere of a time when everything was still written or illustrated by hand, typed on a typewriter, or set using lead letters, as computers did not exist back then. To emphasize the effect of old printing presses on paper, which made it seem as if text and graphics were stamped onto the paper, I selected Pulpo Rust, which beautifully represents vintage typography. Hand-drawn illustrations as graphics also seemed to fit well with this theme.
